Zheng He awarded PhD
On 19th September 2011 Zheng He was awarded a PhD degree for his thesis "Functional and vascular consequencies of ocular perfusion pressure modification".
Zheng He had recieved an Albert Shimmins Postgraduate Writing Up Award for his thesis.
Zheng He's PhD study demonstrated that the balance between blood pressure and eye pressure is an important determinant of retinal function. Although retinal dysfunction is related to ischemia, their relationship is not linear due to the compensatory mechanisms. The protection afforded by higher blood pressure is evident in the short term, but becomes less robust in the long term. These data suggest that those with either low or high blood pressure are at increased risk of retinal neurodegeneration.
